Spring Entertaining Trends – KC Home Show

Interior Designer Kristin Rieke

Entertaining has its flaws…We all have those guests that intimidate us or that we want to have their “socks blown off” by our amazing decor and entertaining skills!! But lets face it not all of us are natural born Martha Stewarts and tablescaping among all other things entertaining can be considered daunting!

So I designed a cute, quick and easy to DIY “Spring Tablescape” for all of you to take tips from to turn your entertaining game up a notch!

Let’s dive in and deconstruct it!

Start with your typical pieces (or general dinnerware in your cabinets) and layer the fun stuff on top! I am showing a white salad plate, matching ramekins and a clear glass water goblet from my pieces I use everyday! Find mine here!

Layer Everything.

This again included items I already had, but you can purchase new as well! With my white plate I added a pink glass dessert plate layered on top of another vintage plate with a floral border. The trio becomes the perfect look for spring. Next I brought in some vintage pink crystal glassware for cocktails that offers a different texture and color against the clear glass goblet.  But I think this is where most get hung up…when you are out shopping and see a cute set of dessert plates, but you feel like you have to by the entire set or that they might not match your other pieces. This is ok! Mismatching is popular, its about picking different designs that compliment each other. So next time your shopping at Home Goods, Pottery Barn, etc and see a super cute tea set or cookie plates, BUY THEM! You have my permission! 🙂

Get Crafty.

A few DIY items are fun to add in a bit of handmade. These can be made with friends, your children or by yourself with a glass of wine 🙂 These items are the place cards (which add a personal touch and monogramming is very popular too!), cupcake topper and cocktail stirrer. They don’t take that much materials and many you probably have if you craft or scrapbook!

Reinvent a purpose for something.

The ceramic peck basket is something I had in my living room as an accessory but I repurposed it and filled it with shredded paper and easter eggs.

Most of us will also fall victim to jelly beans during the season whether we purchase them for our children or to stuff eggs with. Here I filled the ramekin with color coordinating jelly beans as a small table setting accent. They are just one small way make an impact with minimal $, next time you swing into the market it is just a matter of making a note to pick them up!

Invest your dollars on the items that make the most impact.

Napkins- Cloth or Paper or Both! NO PAPER TOWELS ALLOWED! You can pick up a cute pack of graphic napkins like mine for under $5.00. Then I chose to also include simple white cloth napkins (check out this You Tube video to fold like me!) and a wooden paint dipped tag as my napkin rings (found at Target Dollar Deals!).

Desserts are always easy to present or garnish I chose the naked confetti cupcakes from 3 Women and An Oven.

Parker Payne provided the gorgeous florals which are another smart investment and you can continue to enjoy them even after the party!

Next time you are planning to entertain I hope you take a few of the above tips and incorporate them into your soiree. I promise it will be worth it and your guests will notice and be very impressed!
