“Check” It Out

Check Interior Design Trends

Kristin Rieke – Interior Designer

Check can come in many forms: gingham, plaid, tartan, buffalo check just to drop a few. It is a classy trend that has always been around the design and fashion industries and will most likely remain. But depending on the scale and color of the check you are planning on incorporating on your home it can have a dramatic impact or a more subdued look. Below are a couple of examples.

One being a standard “Buffalo Check” pillow by Faribault Woolen Mills. It is in the classic red and black hues and includes a larger scale of check, this look tends to have more of a masculine, rustic bold look associated with it.

The other is a smaller scale grey and white print check pillow cover from IKEA!!! P.S. It’s an IKEA HACK..details below!!! This pillow is a bit more fresh, bright, feminine and chic.

I wanted you to see how you can take one trend and a relatively small item to introduce a trend into your space. Plus how you can bend the look to compliment your space and taste. Don’t feel like you have to stay within the set perimeters if a pillow is shown in pink but you’re more of a green fan, then by all means use the green version or make your own!

So the IKEA HACK! Let me break it down..

Pillow Cover: $6 – IKEA  Yup! Easy neutral pillow cover soon to be revamped!

Screen Print: $15 – I reached out to a local Screen Printer (Landmarx Graphics in Old Town Lenexa). If you look around there are fun words and phrases in art prints, on t-shirts, mugs, etc you name its out there in the marketplace.  So I selected a phrase I liked “BE YOURSELF” and used the “on trend” metallic gold (or rose gold, polished brass are also popular), and if you don’t want gold or metallic you could select whatever suits your space best!

Tassels: $5.75 (I had a coupon) – 1 Skein of Martha Stewart Crafts / Lion BrandExtra Soft Wool Blend Yarn in Color Gerbera Daisy. Again if you don’t like the color I selected feel free to pick whichever color suits your style!

Pillow Insert: FREE or $14. I had some extra but if you needed to purchase one I included Restoration Hardware’s link. P.S. General Designer Rule: Order your inserts 2″ larger than your pillow cover except when you order from RH..They already take this into account. In this case if shopping from a big box store purchase a 22″ to fill a 20″ pillow.

And Volia! Hopefully I covered it all. If not let me know!
